Weekly Geeks 4

#1. What are you passionate about besides reading and blogging? For example, are you crafty (knitting, woodworking, scrapbooking, model building)? Do you cook? Into gaming (computer or board)? Sports (player or spectator)? Photography? Maybe you like geocaching, rock climbing? Or love attending events like renaissance fairs, concerts? Music? Dancing? You get the idea.
Tell us why you're passionate about it. Post photos of what you've made or of yourself doing whatever it is you love doing.

Oh my. I'm a magpie. I pick up interests, and put them away again, neglected. I do, however, have a few that have stuck. Outside of reading, they are cross stitching, movies, jigsaw puzzles and word finds and crossword ... and I would have said TV but my column has just been canned by work, so not so much. Sigh. So not particularly exciting interests. I'd like to say something like Extreme Archaeology, but .... I'm doing a bit of cross stitching on and off, but I can't do it at all when Patrick is up so it's on a go-slow. Movies I love, although I don't talk about that here very much. I also love to do jigsaws, but I'm limited to doing them online at the moment, which is oddly addictive.

(Aside: Could I SOUND like a bigger nerd???)

#2. Get us involved. Link to tutorials, recipes, Youtube videos, websites, fan sites, etc, anything that will help us learn more about your interest or how to do your hobby. Maybe you'd like to link to another hobbyist whose work you admire or tell us about a book or magazine related to your interest.

Hmmmm .... oddly, maybe, I don't visit a lot of cross stitching blogs. But when I'm looking for charts to buy, here is where I go:

http://123stitch.com/ http://www.abcstitch.com/ and of course http://www.trademe.co.nz/ which has a pretty comprehensive crafts section.
I've never looked it up on YouTube, and I have no idea how to embed videos, if there are any, but googling it led me to this video: http://www.wikihow.com/Cross-Stitch which is a step-by-step. I find it easy and relaxing, when I'm watching TV. I should do it more when I'm watching TV, but I've been very, very lazy.
This is what I'm working on right now:

It's Circe, by Jill Oxton, after a painting by John Waterhouse. This isn't my work, obviously ... for one thing, it's finished and mine's not. But that's approximately what it will look like, I hope.

I have many, many other works in progress, but I won't show them here, because they'd take over the whole post. Ahem.

As for the others ... for movie news and such, I mainly go here: www.darkhorizons.com and if I need to know when the movie I want to see is starting, then I go here: www.readingcinemas.co.nz And I just bought a book called Stephen King at the Movies, which goes into the backstories of five film adaptations of his works. I'm sure I'll think of others, after I've put this up.
For online jigsaws I have three sites that I visit every day: www.jigzone.com, www.crazyforjigsaws.com and www.thinks.com, which also has links for word puzzles and suchlike.
Oh! And www.freerice.com I love playing Free Rice :)
As for Extreme Archaeology ... I'm an armchair adventurer. So that's mostly through the History channel, on our satellite network:
#3. Visit other Weekly Geeks. Link in your post to other Geeks who've peaked your interest in their passion. Or maybe you might find a fellow afincionado among us, link to them. Back later in the week for this one, I think :)
Happy Weekly Geeks. Live long and prosper.

I used to do a lot of cross stitch but it's really time consuming. I really should get back into it.

I'm a bit of a magpie too. I wish I could do everything and I end up doing nothing. Other than read, that is :P

I love Waterhouse! Your project is so cool.

I like your cross stitch project. Do you have a picture of your progress somewhere? I love seeing WIP pictures. Thanks for a great post.

I'm a magpie, too. I can't seem to find something and stick with it enough to be passionate about it. :)

I used to cross stitch while watching TV but now I blog or draw. My post is here.

I have never heard of this expression, 'magpie'! What do you mean? Nymeth used it the other day, too... I will check out your movie sites: I love awardsdaily.com. Happy Weekly Geeks!

That cross stitch is so pretty! I used to do cross stitch but I decided I wanted to do something more practical and took up knitting. Debatable whether that's more practical, but there it is.

I pick up and put down hobbies, too. I have a lot of cross-stitch projects in my cabinet. I'm not doing much with them at the moment, but when the mood strikes, I'll cross-stitch like crazy ;o). But then the mood wanes and I won't pick up my stitching at all (once it was several years in between bursts!). Because I also cross-stitch when I watch TV, when I'm not cross-stitching, I also watch no TV. I think I'm going on about a year now with no TV and no cross-stitching, but I've no doubt that, one day, the urge will come back ;o). The only hobby that I don't pick up and put down is reading. I'm pretty consistent with my reading.

I don't think I can cross stitch while watching TV. I haven't really tried -- haven't done any cross stitching for years, actually -- but I'm not really the type who can multitask easily. People who knit while reading never cease to amaze me!

That's a lovely project you chose. Hope it'll get completed soon.

Also love your cat picture there. :D

I used to be an avid cross-stitcher--especially in the evenings while watching tv-but the older me and my eyes have gotten, I have a hard time stitching at night.
Lovely project you have going--hope to see your finished work someday!

Thanks everyone. I hope you're all enjoying the Weekly Geeks like I am :)
Care: a magpie is someone who is attracted to bright and shiny (ie new) things and _ in my case _ someone with a short attention span.
Kerry: I might post a work-in-progress pic; I'll see how I go.
Happy Weekly Geeks :)

I guess I am sort of a magpie myself, as I have many different interests, but it is not always that I have time to keep up with all of them. Cross stitching (as well as knitting, sewing and all other crafts) are not for me. I don't have the patience and I suck at it ;o)

LOL... I read your post before I started mine and I sooooo wanted to steal your line that you were a magpie.

I, of course, used to cross stitch. I made three things before my eyes wandered.

I cross stitch too! I love all your jigsaw puzzle sites, I've put them in my favorites!

I used to love jigsaw puzzles but for the time being blogging & visiting other bloggers takes up all my spare time :)

I am the same way. I pick up tons of interests only to lose them a few weeks later. I try to do crosswords, but don't have the patience. Buddies of mine used to bust on me because of all the reading I do.

I used to love cross-stitch, but I think that is a cold-weather hobby. Since moving to Hawaii, it's just never felt right to huddle up on the couch and stitch. I have a 3/4-finished project that's been languishing for 7 years now, and I don't see an end in sight. I think part of the problem too is that I don't know how I would preserve anything out here. Fabric mildews, even behind glass. It's ridiculous.
